Our clients were looking for a low maintenance solution to there very open blank canvas garden. The barn conversion is used as a holiday home and therefor needed to be easy to look after but still allow them to express themselves in the garden.
The space needed places to plant and a space to eat outside and relax. The clients were keen on having a herb garden and trying to make the space feel more private without loosing its sense of open space. The wind tended to whip through the garden so we needed to create a screen to help shelter the garden.
We designed a gravel garden surrounded by raised sleeper beds. The sleeper beds were in keeping with the sleepers that were already in the garden as a retaining wall. We installed trellis against these beds and framed the entrance with our unique hand made rustic panels. Each panel contains two antique garden tools, one at the top and one at the bottom. Both the trellis and the panels were stained black which made them blend in to there surroundings.
We used railway sleepers to mark out a path that leads to the front door or to the car parking space. around these we planted a range of herbs in the gravel garden.
We then built a hexagonal patio in one corner of the private garden area.
Using raised beds allows weeding without the back breaking work making this garden low maintenance but still allowing the owners to have the flower borders they wanted.
