The job of a good garden designer is to solve practical problems in a creative and beautiful way. One such problem is the issue of garden privacy.
Unless your very lucky, most modern houses are built close together providing very little privacy as they are  overlooked by the neighbors.
As time is becoming increasingly precious as is our privacy and the need for a little idle we can call our own to relax in.
As I have mentioned in previous blog posts a pergola offers a secluded seating area but can be a little shady.

So how to introduce privacy without losing all the light especially in a small garden.

One simple method is to increase the fence height with trellis and climbers for garden privacy. This way you get colour as well. Choose an evergreen climber and increase the year round interest, a good evergreen is clematis Jingle bells, a scented climber with white flowers from Christmas through to spring.

A contemporary screening for garden privacy is the pleached tree, effectively a hedge on stilts, this has been very popular for the last few years. Not a budget solution though as good quality established trees will cost in the region of £200-£600 per tree. The investment is worth it as this is an instant and very attractive way to screen your garden. The most popular tree has been Carpinus betulus or Hornbeam but other choices are available for example the fiery red foliage of photiniea red Robin. The trees pictured below are from  website, they provide beautiful trees that will enhance any garden.

Introducing screens around a seating area gives the feeling of of seclusion. These can be staggered so it doesn’t appear fenced of. You can use woven willow panels, tall plants or for a smart modern look there are corten steel screens with a large choice of patterns cut into them. These screens are made by Cutting Technologies ltd a company that laser cuts patterns in a variety of materials but my favorite is the corten steel.
